EU Horizon 2020 BEACON - Enabling Federated Cloud Networking. 2015-17
Beacon is a Research and Development project, which receives funding from the EU through its Horizon 2020 framework programme.
The main goal of this project is two-fold: research and develop techniques to federated cloud network resources, and to derive the integrated management cloud layer that enables an efficient and secure deployment of federated cloud applications.
BEACON will deliver an homogeneous virtualization layer, on top of heterogeneous underlying physical networks, computing and storage infrastructures, providing enablement for automated federation of applications across different clouds and datacenters.
The BEACON project is fully committed to open source software, the research and development activities of the consortium will be based on existing open source projects. Cloud networking aspects will be based on OpenDayLight, a collaborative project under The Linux Foundation, and specifically we will leverage and extend the OpenDOVE project with new rich intercloud APIs to provision cross-site virtual networks overlays
CETIC is the Belgian applied research centre focused on Information and Communication Technologies. Its main mission is to act as the interface between Academic and Industry to quicken research and innovation in the Walloon region and beyond. Founded in 2001 by three key Belgian universities (UCL, FUNDP and UMONS), it has now grown into an independent research institution that has partnered with many research organizations through the world as well as relationships with European R&D organizations (e.g. CRPHT or INRIA) developed thanks to very intensive collaborations in more than 20 European research projects (IP, NOE, STReP, ERAnet, and InterReg). The three research departments at CETIC have developed an expertise in:
● Software and System Engineering with a focus on software processes and products quality, requirements engineering, formal methods, and IT systems reverse engineering.
● Embedded and Communication Systems notably in hardwaresoftware codesign, and methodologies related to programming electronic cards (FPGA).
● Software and Services Technologies, targeting high availability, mobility, semantic, security, privacy and trustworthy computing in cloud environments.
Furthermore, CETIC actively disseminates its knowledge at international conferences and to standardization bodies most importantly thanks to its involvement as an ISO Belgian representative in various committees on topics in Software and System Engineering (SC7), Security (SC27), Distributed Computing (SC38) and Health Informatics (TC215).
The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (http://www.ucm.es) is the largest and most renowned university in Spain, with over 700 hundred years of history. The research group involved in BEACON is the Distributed Systems Architecture Research Group (http://dsaresearch. org), which is part of the Computer Science Faculty. DSAResearch group conducts research in advanced distributed computing and virtualization technologies for largescale infrastructures and resource provisioning platforms, being involved in several research and development initiatives in grid and Cloud Computing.
